McCrory School District Wellness Policy
McCrory School District is committed to the optimal development of every student. The District believes that for students to have the opportunity to achieve personal, academic, developmental, and social success, we need to create positive, safe, and health-promoting learning environments at every level, in every setting, throughout the school year. Research shows that two components, good nutrition and physical activity before, during, and after the school day, are strongly correlated with positive student outcomes. This policy outlines the District's approach to ensuring environments and opportunities for all students to practice healthy eating and physical activity behaviors throughout the school day while minimizing commercial distractions.
School Meals
The District is committed to serving healthy meals to children, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free and low-fat milk; moderate in sodium, low in saturated fat, and zero grams trans fat per serving (nutrition label or manufacturer's specification); and to meet the nutrition needs of school children within their calorie requirements. All schools within the District participate in USDA child nutrition programs, including the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP). All schools within the District are committed to offering school meals through the NSLP and SBP programs.
- All school meals are accessible to all students.
- The district offers reimbursable school meals that meet USDA nutrition standards.
- Drinking water will be available to all students throughout the school day and throughout every school campus, including during mealtimes.
- Students will be allowed at least 10 minutes to eat breakfast and at least 20 minutes to eat lunch, counting from the time they have received their meal and are seated.
- All school nutrition program staff will meet or exceed hiring and annual continuing
- education requirements in the USDA professional standards for child nutrition
- professionals.
Other food available at school
- The foods and beverages sold outside of the school meal programs (i.e., "competitive" foods and beverages) will meet the USDA Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards, at a minimum.
- All foods offered on the school campus will meet or exceed the USDA Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards. Exemptions may be allowed at the discretion of the school principal, but shall not exceed more than one exemption per class.
- The District will provide a list of healthy party ideas and snacks to parents and teachers, including non-food celebration ideas (Healthy Party Ideas);
- The District will provide to parents a list of foods and beverages that meet Smart Snacks nutrition standards; and
- The District will provide teachers and other relevant school staff a list of alternative

The McCrory School District will be participating in the National School Lunch Program, Afterschool Snack Program, and the School Breakfast Program]. Households may be eligible for free or reduced price meal benefits. Applications may be found on mccroryschools.org under dining. Households that participate in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) may be eligible for free or reduced price meals. To apply for free or reduced price meals, households must complete and return the application. Applications will be considered incomplete if all information is not provided as described in the instructions provided with the application. Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year as circumstances change provided that the loss of income causes the household income during the period of unemployment to be within the eligibility criteria.
Households with children who received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. may submit an application with abbreviated information as described in the application instructions.
All applications are subject to verification. Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the ruling of the determining official may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. Parents wishing to make a formal appeal for a hearing on the decision may make a request to: Mr. Scott Waymire at 870-731-2535.
Children certified as foster, migrant, homeless or runaway by the district are categorically eligible for free meals. Contact the school counselor at 870-731-2535 with questions regarding foster, migrant, homeless or runaway meal benefits.
Households who are notified of their efigibility but who do not want their children to receive free meals must contact the school. SNAP households should complete an application if they are not notified of their eligibility by September 23,2026.
In the operation of child feeding programs, no child will be discriminated against because of race, sex, color, national origin, age, or disability.
